 Dr Sonia Nankani completed her post graduation in ophthalmology from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. Following that she trained in Cornea and Microsurgery at L.V.Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. She has worked in the capacity of Associate Professor at D.Y.Patil medical college, Nerul and was head of department at Rajawadi General Municipal Hospital.Dr Sonia Nankani is a proficient cataract surgeon. All cataract surgeries she performs by phacoemulsification (Laser) have no stitch, no injection and no pad. Patients walk in with cataract and walk out with sight. Her forte is corneal surgeries. She does corneal transplants in large numbers both penetrating (full thickness) and lamellar (partial thickness). She performs sutureless (with glue) pterygium surgery. Dr Nankani is also trained in LASIK (spectacle removal by laser) surgery. She is trained in medical retina and is proficient in the laser treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy and Age Related Macular Degeneration. She has performed for the first time in Maharashtra the tooth in the eye surgery (Osteo Odonto Keratoprosthesis) to give vision to a 50 year old man who was blind in both eyes for 20 years. Over the last month three more such surgeries have been performed at Bombay Hospital. In India other than Chennai this surgery is being performed by her and her team at Bombay Hospital. |
